Parsons Gives Back

Coffee with the CEO

Last month, a few of our new hires sat down for some coffee with Parsons President and CEO, Joel Moryn, who was a new hire in the warehouse over 30 years ago himself, for a face-to-face to answer any questions and chat about his experiences within the company. It was a great opportunity to meet the man behind the curtain and get a better feel for what Parsons stands for. Thanks Joel, for taking time out of your day to chat with our new employees! #culture #values #CEO

Celebrating Construction Week 2017

Construction Week is more than just celebrating all of our successful projects. The purpose behind Construction Week is to make the community aware of the exciting, safe, and rewarding opportunities the construction industry has to offer. More importantly, this is an opportunity for those in the industry to reach out to and beyond our community in an effort to educate students, parents, teachers, counselors, and administrators on the benefits of working in the commercial construction industry. Some of these benefits may include higher pay and more job satisfaction. There are numerous career opportunities for students who want to enter the workforce immediately after high school and for those who want to attend a 2-year technical school or a 4-year college.

The shortage of workers in skilled trades is at an all-time high, and it will continue to increase in the coming years. “Many construction firms across the country are facing significant workforce shortages, especially within the largest segment of the workforce – hourly craft workers,” says Stephen E. Sandherr, CEO of the Associated General Contractors of America. “…That is why we need a new, state-by-state focus on recruiting the next generation of construction workers into the industry. Establishing a special week focused on the many benefits and rewards of working in construction will go a long way in helping bring new workers into high-paying construction careers.”

While construction week is a time to celebrate completed projects and those who contribute to the industry, it is even more important to increase public awareness throughout our community about the shortage of construction workers and the excellent opportunities available to those who may want to pursue a career in construction. Dedicating a week to the recruitment of tomorrow’s construction workers through education and inspiration helps bring the next generation of workers into the industry. Perry Thompson Earns Lean Black Belt Certification from Lean Leadership Institute

Congratulations to Parsons Lean Executive Director Perry Thompson for earning his Lean Black Belt!

Perry Thompson pictured with his Lean Black Belt Certificate

The Black Belt is the top certification for a Lean Leadership program. This certification was achieved after significant effort by Perry beginning in 2014.

Earning a Lean Black Belt certified by the Lean Leadership Institute requires coaching by another Black Belt in the active use of all of the lean tools and processes as well as coaching others in implementing lean tools.

Lean Leadership Institute’s George Trachilis, with consultation by Dr. Jacob Abraham, provided the coaching and certification for Perry. Many have experienced Perry’s high-quality coaching as well as helped develop the skills he needed to earn this recognition.

We expect Perry’s accomplishment will inspire other Parsons leaders to commit to achieving Lean Certification in the Yellow and Green Belt levels as well as some dedicated Lean Leaders willing to follow Perry’s fine example. Thank you, Perry, for providing this path of accomplishment for us all to follow as we continue on our Lean journey at Parsons.

Parsons 5th Annual Apprentice & Pre-Apprentice Orientation

Parsons held its 5th Annual Apprentice and Pre-Apprentice Orientation for Parsons employees last week.

The group was comprised of apprentices and pre-apprentices from IBEW Local 292 and IBEW Local 110. We had the opportunity to discuss “The Parsons Way” of doing business as well as demonstrating Parsons’ mission statement in all we do.

In addition to training, it was an excellent way to introduce the group to all of the career opportunities within the Parsons family of companies.

Parsons is thrilled to welcome this group of talented apprentices and pre-apprentices and look forward to the impact we will make together moving forward.

Parsons Receives Governor’s Safety Award of Honor

Parsons has received the Governor’s Safety Award of Honor in Occupational Safety!

Parsons Safety Team Receives Governor's Safety Award of Honor

Parsons’ Safety Team, led by Safety Director Bonnie Lunzer, accepts the Governor’s Safety Award of Honor.

The Award of Honor is the highest award given by the Minnesota Safety Council. To receive it, an organization’s DART rate (Injuries without days away, restrictions, and/or transfers) must be at least 91% better than the average company in our industry. This also includes a Safety Program Evaluation score between 91 and 100 points.

The Safety Program Evaluation looks at four areas of our safety program:

  • Responsibilities and accountabilities
  • Hazard identification, control, and analysis
  • Incident investigation
  • Communication and training

Parsons had a great safety record in 2016. In addition to the Governor’s Safety Award, Parsons qualified for and received two different awards from the National Safety Council:

  • Perfect Record Award – recognizes companies that completed a period of at least twelve consecutive months without injury that resulted in time away from work or fatality
  • Million Work Hours Award – recognizes companies that have zero work-related illness, injuries, or fatalities involving time away from work for at least 1 million consecutive hours. Parsons not only met the requirement but as of 12/31/2016, we actually achieved 3.5 million hours without a time away from work injury!

The Parsons family of companies believes every employee should go home safe and sound every night. Thank you to our entire team for making safety our culture.

Parsons Receives NECA’s Recognition of Safety Excellence

Parsons has received the 2017 NECA Recognition of Safety Excellence.

Parsons was awarded the 2017 NECA Recognition of Safety Achievement

NECA recognizes organizations that have worked a full calendar year without recordable incidents. In addition, it acknowledges member-contractor safety performance. To qualify, an organization’s safety performance is evaluated based on OSHA recordable injury and fatality rates lower than the industry standard as well as the implementation of company safety practices that are above and beyond basic compliance.

The award is broken up into five different workforce categories:

  • 1 to 25,000 workforce hours
  • 25,001 – 50,000 workforce hours
  • 50,001 – 100,000 workforce hours
  • 100,001 to 150,000 workforce hours
  • Over 150,001 workforce hours

This award represents the entire Parsons team whose efforts contribute and build our Journey to Zero safety culture. Thank you for your dedication to safety each and every day.
